Managing rice straw and husk remains a prominent challenge in Macedonia. The widespread burning of rice straw is a major contributor to dangerously high levels of air pollution and has been associated with increasing levels of health issues.
Together with students from the high school “Vanco Prke” in Vinica we had talked with experienced scientific workers Ivo Mitrushev and Brankica Spaseva from the UKIM to learn more about rice production, generating ideas for the development of a range of alternative uses that turn rice straw into a commodity around which sustainable value chains can be built to benefit people. We discussed the sustainable rice straw management practices, rice straw value chains, and business models.
